About

The Struve Arc is a line of geodetic triangulation points, created in the 18th–19th centuries. for the first reliable measurement of the size and shape of the Earth. It stretched from Norway to the Black Sea and became an important milestone in the development of planetary science. The Struve Arc is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique scientific object of international importance.

In Volyn, traces of this historical geodetic network can be seen in several places:

• Guta-Kaminska (Kamin-Kashyr district) — here in a field near the village, the remains of the Struve Arc point were found and a memorial sign was restored.

• Krupa (Lutsk district) — a geodetic point placed in the ground as a marker of historical measurements, from where wide views open.

• Torchyn (Lutsk district) — also a place where the presence of a network of triangulation points connected to the Struve Arc is indicated.

These markers are monuments of important scientific and historical heritage, allowing us to imagine how scientists once measured the planet without modern technologies. Volyn is unique in that such traces of world scientific history have been preserved on its lands.
