About

Olyka Castle is one of the most magnificent residences of the Radziwill family and a unique monument of Renaissance fortification architecture in Volyn. Located in the heart of Olyka, the castle was not only a defensive structure, but also the political, administrative, and cultural center of one of the most influential families of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The construction of the castle began in the middle of the 16th century on the initiative of Prince Mykola Radziwill "the Black". Olytsia Castle became one of the first examples of a regular bastion fortress of a new type on the Ukrainian lands, built according to the principles of the Italian school of defense. Quadrangular in plan, surrounded by powerful ramparts, bastions, and moats, it was considered virtually impregnable.

In addition to its defensive function, the castle served as a luxurious magnate's residence. Inside, there were palace buildings, a chapel, utility and service rooms, and a developed urban and park space was formed around it. The castle was the center of administration of the Olytsk Ordinance and played a key role in the political life of the region.

Over the centuries, Olytsia Castle has repeatedly withstood sieges and experienced historical upheavals, but in the twentieth century it suffered significant losses and reconstruction. Despite this, it has retained the monumentality of its forms and the clarity of its Renaissance composition, which allows us to feel the scale and grandeur of the magnate's residence even today.

Olytsk Castle is not only a defensive structure, but also a symbol of power, ambition, and European cultural influences in Volyn. It remains one of the most interesting historical sites in the region and an important testament to the past glory of Olyka.
