Lutsk Castle

Lutsk Castle, or Lubart Castle, is the upper castle of Lutsk, one of the two partially preserved castle complexes of the city, a monument of architecture and history of national importance. It is one of the largest, oldest and best preserved castles of Ukraine, the main object of the historical and cultural reserve "Old Lutsk", a cultural center and the oldest building of the city.

The history of Lutsk Castle goes back centuries. It did not arise in an empty place: back in the 10th century, on a hill surrounded by the windings of the Styr River, there was a fortified settlement - the chronicle Luchesk, which is traditionally associated with the activities of Prince Volodymyr the Great. Although the early fortress was inferior in power to the later castle of the Lithuanian era, in 1069 it was able to withstand the siege of the Polish army of King Bolesław II the Brave.

In the Ipatiev Chronicle, the Lutsk Fortress is mentioned under 1085: during the internecine wars, Prince Volodymyr Monomakh captured the mother and wife of Prince Yaropolk, who was in Poland at the time in search of military support.

The construction of the Upper Castle began in the 1350s under Prince Lubart Gediminas and was largely completed by 1430, although some architectural elements, in particular the height of the towers, changed over the following centuries. The surrounding castle began to be rebuilt in brick in 1502. Since its creation, the castle served as the residence of the Grand Duke, and after the Union of Lublin, as the center of royal power, where the political, administrative, judicial, defensive and religious functions of the Volyn Voivodeship were concentrated.

For centuries, Lutsk Castle served as a princely court, court, treasury and a powerful fortification. It was here that important state events, solemn ceremonies and the congress of European monarchs in 1429 took place.

The architectural ensemble of the castle is formed by three majestic towers - Vyzna, Styrov and Vladycha, connected by high brick walls. The fortress is a vivid example of Volyn Gothic and medieval defensive architecture, striking with its monumentality, well-thought-out protection system and harmony of forms.

Today, Lutsk Castle is a living museum space and the cultural heart of the city. Its territory hosts exhibitions dedicated to the history of Volyn, bell-making, book printing, archeology and art, and the castle courtyards become a place for festivals, concerts and artistic events that combine the medieval atmosphere with modern cultural life.
